i love this woman’s work wardrobe.  so classy and chic. this is how i’d like to dress. if only i could get through the day in heels.  i find it hilarious that someone commented “i’ll dress like this when i’m 40.” honey, if you do them right, these looks are ageless.

i <3 her. ladies of a certain age, ftw!

i wish i could do the tucked-in shirt thing. i think my pot belly is a distraction.

for me this photo has encapsulated what i imagined the harlem renaissance was like for some people. not necessarily being rich but living well in every sense of the word and looking fabulous to boot.

if sarah vaughan was known as sassy, i wonder what dinah washington’s nickname was because mother lived.  married 8 times (divorced 7) with some more love sprinkled in between no doubt.  i have to admit, her personal life has never been terribly interesting to me.  it’s her voice.  that voice.  so rich and full of … well, everything: power, emotion, and to my ear, self-assuredness and awareness.

her best known song is probably "what a difference a day makes" but to me, that is a weak song.  there’s nothing flawed about how she sings it but it’s the torch songs that really do it for me.  she sings those songs about unrequited love, lost love, failed love as if she wrote them. there may be something to that given what i do know about her life but no matter. it makes for some beautiful ear candy.

"teach me tonight"

"you don’t know what love is"

sadly, all of what i think are her best songs can’t be found on youtube but i recommend exploring the complete dinah washington on mercury vol. 4
